Will marketing that exploits human nature lose its effectiveness in the age of online business reputation and engagement? Will exploiting human physiology and psychological vulnerability, in the interest of selling goods or services, finally be called by its true name? In the age of illumination by online social action is marketing destined to wither or will marketing be transformed into something new and better?

There is an endless stream of new and improved marketing strategies and techniques, each based upon its own exploit of humankind.

Are we ready for marketing without exploits? Is there such a thing? Is it really a betterment of the world that “science” lends itself to marketing?

Add to the list of exploiting humans “the science” of behavioral marketing and neuroscience marketing. The former has been around for awhile, but lately it’s been increasingly “proven by science”. The latter, neuroscience? Now were going to scan brains to see what’s hot and what’s not in the new product line?

Can a robot consumer be educated, enlightened about their robotic nature – and stand some chance of surmounting the predictable, the controllable – before it’s too late?

Rise of the machines? Man versus machine? Machine wins?

For every move that the science of marketing makes I have to ask myself, anew, do I really have any choice? Do you really have any choice or are you and I just here for the picking?

Can a machine know that it’s a machine and in so knowing transcend that which is mechanical – programmed – about its being?

What will it take for humankind to win the battle of marketers versus humankind? How will the battle be manifest on the Web?

Lastly, without advertising and marketing, what will “fund the Web”, i.e., pay for all the servers, IT personnel, bandwidth, copywriters, etc.?

Maybe we just need a smaller, quieter, Web?
